Jazz Guitar Workshop with James Sherlock

The Nambour Winter Jazz Fest is giving guitarists the opportunity to boost their performance skills at a jazz guitar workshop on Saturday 21st July, from 9:30 – 11:00am with festival artist James Sherlock.

One of the most highly-respected guitarists in Australia today, James Sherlock began playing classical guitar at age 7. He attended the Queensland Conservatorium of Music studying classical guitar, and graduated in 1992; he is now based in Melbourne, Australia. James was the winner of the Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Award. As a bandleader James has released six albums, and appeared on many recordings for other artists.

He works with a variety of Australia'...s finest musicians as well as many visiting artists including New Orleans trumpeter Leroy Jones, New York jazz vocalists Sheila Jordan, Chris McNulty and Cyrille Aimee and master drummers Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Jon Riley. James has also performed/recorded with such diverse artists as British guitar virtuoso Martin Taylor, The Australian Chamber Orchestra, The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Queensland Orchestra, Katie Noonan, Megan Washington, Joe Camilleri & New York film composer Howard Shore. The James Sherlock Trio was featured in the ABC TV Jazz Series "The Pulse".

Performing later in the day at the Nambour Winter Jazz Fest, James will take time out to share his talents with workshop participants. Suitable for those with existing guitar skills who want to understand the skills and techniques particular to jazz guitar, participants will learn practical approaches to accompaniment and soloing over jazz harmony. Topics may include introduction to jazz chords, improvising melodic lines, jazz rhythm, and ear training. This will be a marvellous opportunity for musicians to learn from a guitarist of such a high calibre.

The workshop takes place in C-Square, Currie St, Nambour. You will be notified of the venue closer to the date.
