Jazz Improvisation Workshop with Willy Qua
The Nambour Winter Jazz Fest is giving musicians the opportunity to boost their performance skills at a jazz improvisation workshop on Saturday 21st July, from 9:30 – 11:00am with festival artist Willy Qua.
One of the founding members of Galapagos Duck, Willy has worked , toured and recorded with international stars such as Mark Murphy, Jimmy Witherspoon, Barney Kessel, Sam and Dave, Georgie Fame, Herb Ellis , Earl Hines, Mel Lewis and local artists James Morrison, Don Burrows, Ricky May, Errol Buddle, Galapagos Duck to name just a few.
Willy has had two branches to his career- one as a drummer and percussionist and the other as a Saxophone and flute player. He is ...highly respected in both fields. He brings his extensive experience and musical skills to Nambour Winter Jazz Fest to run a workshop on jazz and improvisation. This workshop will cover:
Basics : Blues , creating melodies using the blues scale and the related minor and major pentatonic scales.
Next : Chord changes eg. II - IV - I ‘s - major and minor.
Common chord change sequences and appropriate improvisational techniques.
Finally : diminished, whole tone and chromatic scales. Creating improvised melodies using these resources in Jazz four, Latin and rock feels
This will be a marvellous opportunity for emerging and current musicians to learn from a musician of such a high calibre.
The workshop takes place in C-Square, Currie St, Nambour. You will be notified of the venue closer to the date.
