The fabulous Blood and Bone Banquet, presented by The Bison Bar and Darkside Productions, was an affair to remember. Held at C-Square, the event took place in the moonlight under a specially built fairy light canopy in the courtyard. The evening took its inspiration from the spiritual roots of Halloween – the eve before All Saints’ Day, where the souls of the dead are remembered, and our own mortality is set before us.
Blood and Bone was a collaborative affair between The Bison Bar and Darkside Productions. Darkside project managers collaborated with several unique businesses – Hinterland Photography (the principal photographer, Larissa Salton, styled the setting), Kudos Events, Features for Creatures, Pete Schulz’s Mythcraft, Makeup by Lily with Lily Donahoe, senior hair stylist Keira Salton, and the Darkside models(Renelle, Haydn, Alex, Taj, Sasha and Rusty).
The occasion brought together 55 guests who shared in a mediaeval-style banquet, with a seven-course degustation menu, including pig on a spit, prepared to perfection by The Bison Bar’s chef, Josh Machlachlan.
A web of lights dotted the sky, projection art clothed the walls, and a menu fit for a king was served by waiters in disguise. Reminders of death came from guests’ themed costumes, to the menu itself (including Babushka’s Bubbling Borscht, and squid-ink beef Carpaccio with bone marrow crumb and blood plum jus), to the themed cocktails.
Traditional Halloween practices from centuries past were brought to the event, including the displaying of bones with an emphasis on antlers and skulls, fire twirlers, and psychics practicing divination. Guests enjoyed intimate readings alongside various courses. The event was designed to highlight the senses and create an experience.
‘The evening was amazing,’ said Bison Bar owner-operator Leishka Grygoruk. ‘And the courtyard is such a great space to work with. The different levels make it so easy to decorate. I would definitely recommend it as a venue for events.’
